ARTICLES OF MEMBERSHIP
A Constitutional Document of the East Van Yacht Club
Preamble
Whereas the waters of False Creek run between the towers of the wealthy and the streets of the rest of us; and whereas a sailboat is a sailboat regardless of who's standing on it; and whereas no one should need a blazer and a glass of Champagne to feel the wind — the East Van Yacht Club hereby declares itself open to all.
We have no clubhouse. We have no waiting list. We have no dress code, though we do have opinions about fabric... and Crocs.
We have one boat. It is steel. It has character (rust).
Article I — On Membership
Membership in the East Van Yacht Club is open to anyone who has ever eaten a sandwich on a dock, lost a toque to the wind, or looked at the water and thought: yeah, that.
There are no dues. There are no fees. There is no committee to impress.
Membership is conferred automatically upon purchase of any EVYC garment. You are in. Welcome aboard. Try not to spill anything.
Article II — On Ranks
The Club recognizes the following ranks, awarded entirely based on vibes:
DECKHAND — You're here. You showed up. That's enough.
FIRST MATE — You've told at least five people about us.
NAVIGATOR — You've actually been on the water. Doesn't matter what kind.
COMMODORE — We'll figure out the criteria when we get there.
Article III — On Conduct
Members of the East Van Yacht Club are expected to:
1. Treat the water with respect.
2. Treat other people on the water with respect.
3. Not be weird about it if someone's boat is nicer than yours.
4. Not be weird about it if someone's boat is worse than yours.
5. Know that the best boat is the one you're on.
Article IV — On the Fleet
The EVYC fleet currently consists of one (1) steel sailboat, berthed in False Creek, Vancouver, BC. She is not large. She is not fast. She is ours, and we love her.
Article V — On the Spirit of the Thing
We exist because the water doesn't belong to anyone, and nobody should pretend otherwise. We exist because East Van is the best Van. We exist because someone had to say it.
Come sail with us. The Skytrain runs nearby. Parking is a nightmare.
Ratified by unanimous consent of everyone who was there.
Based in East Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. On the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
